The pure and subtle design aesthetic of Grand Seiko is evident in every detail of SBGY002, as is the skill and care taken by the watchmakers at the Shinshu Watch Studio where the watch is made. The 18K yellow gold case is polished by a special Zaratsu method created to accentuate the beauty of the curved surfaces. In keeping with the case, the dial and the sapphire crystal are also curved to give the watch a classic look.
The dial expresses a distinct pattern known as the "Snowflake," inspired by the wind-swept snow in the mountains of Shinshu. This dial design was first introduced in Japan in 2005 and globally in 2010, and it became an immediate hit. This mesmerizing texture gives the dial ample dimensionality and results in a truly unique timepiece. The blued steel second hand moves smoothly in a continuous gliding motion, a feature that is emblematic of Spring Drive, and the blue of the hand contrasts beautifully against the white of the dial and the warmth of the yellow gold case.
SBGY002 is powered by the manual-winding Spring Drive Caliber 9R31. This movement has two mainsprings set in parallel within a single barrel, and offers a high precision rate of one second a day and delivers a power reserve of 72 hours.
