SBGC231 draws inspiration from the strength and power of the Grand Seiko lion, the symbol of the brand since the first Grand Seiko watch launched in 1960. The lion reflects the ambition of the Grand Seiko team to make a watch that was as precise, durable, and beautiful as could be; in other words, they defined their goal as making the “king of watches.”
The case, itself inspired by lions, is highly geometric, and it's angled inwards to offer a comfortable fit on the wrist. It features a beautiful blend of Zaratsu polishing and hairline finishing, which helps to bring out the distinct case architecture. The dial pattern represents the mane of the lion, and a second hand driven by the Spring Drive movement slides gracefully across the lion's mane.
The watch is powered by Caliber 9R96, a Spring Drive chronograph with a column wheel and a GMT function. It features the lion symbol in the form of an 18k rose gold insert in the oscillating weight, which denotes the enhanced accuracy of this specially adjusted movement to +/-0.5 seconds a day.
